One of the most commonly overlooked decisions is the placement of the breast implant itself. While it’s important to make such a decision based on the professional opinion of your plastic surgeon, it helps to be educated on the topic in advance, so you aren’t thrown off-guard when the question is directed to you.

There are two options for the placement of your saline or silicone breast implants: subglandular and submuscular.

• Subglandular placement means that the implants are placed above the muscle. This makes them easier to place, which is important to both the surgeon and the patient. Some surgeons report that patients who receive subglandular implants recover with less pain and experience a shorter amount of down time. Incision options are in the underarm, fold or nipple/areola.
• Submuscular implants are placed behind the pectoral muscle through the opening at the base of the muscle. If the goal is to lift sagging breasts, this may not be the best option, since the location of the implant makes it difficult to support its weight. Submuscular implants often produce better results for women with small breasts and are sometimes described as appearing more natural since all edges and ripples are covered by the muscle. There are three incision options that include under the armpit, under the fold, and through the areola.

When deciding which placement option is right for you, remember to keep your cosmetic goal in mind. Each placement option has its advantages and disadvantages, so talk to your doctor about what’s best for you and your body.
