Pope Plastic Surgery Center - ASPS Member Surgeon

Many men also face large breast problems due to factors such as: obesity, heredity, liver disease, hormonal metabolism, drug side effects and other medical problems. The condition is called Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement.  For these individuals, Male Breast Reduction is highly recommended. This procedure helps in achieving a chest that is well contoured, flat and firm.

Upon consultation, Dr. Pope will perform a thorough assessment and take the client’s medical history. The cause of enlargement, skin elasticity and skin quality will be evaluated to determine the appropriate techniques that will be used during the surgery. The procedure will be explained to the client and photographs of similar clients having undergone the procedure will be presented. If fatty tissue is the cause of Gynecomastia, then a liposuction may also be recommended to remove excess and unwanted fat from the area. Areas to be suctioned may vary depending on the client’s desired figure after the procedure.

The operation is done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. It takes about one to three hours to perform the entire procedure depending on the extent of correction. Traditional surgical incision is used when the cause of breast enlargement is not the excess fat deposit but rather the result of glandular disorder.

The excision of the glandular mass, skin and fat may be done alone or together with liposuction. Incisions are made at the edge of the areola or at the underarm to hide the scar. If significant amounts of tissue need to be removed, then larger incisions may be made.

Post surgery, bed rest is recommended. Surgical dressings are required for a couple of weeks and analgesics and antibiotics may be prescribed by the surgeon to reduce pain and prevent infection. Swelling, bruising and tenderness may also be experienced but that subsides in a few days. The sutures are cleared in about two weeks and normal activities may be resumed a week after the surgery.

Individuals who have undergone the procedure report an increased satisfaction in their figure. They have boosted self-confidence. However, obese clients are not advised to undergo this surgery.  Male Breast Reduction is also not recommended for individuals who abuse alcohol or use drugs.
