Otoplasty, commonly known as ear plastic surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to rectify the physical deformity of ears. The surgery is performed to reduce the size of large ears or pin back ears that protrude too far from the head. The procedure can greatly improve a person’s appearance and self esteem.
Children with deformed ears may be subject to teasing and ridicule, while it may be a cause of self consciousness in many adults. But with a safe medical treatment like ear plastic surgery, this problem can be permanently resolved by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
To start with otoplasty procedure, the surgeon makes a small cut behind the ear to expose the cartilage. This cartilage is then reshaped and any excess skin is removed. If required, the ear is repositioned more closely to the head, and the cut is closed with permanent stitches or sutures. The duration of the surgery is between one to two hours. In most of the cases, the patients are discharged from the hospital on the same day.
There would be some bruising, accompanied by pain, swelling or throbbing of the ears for a few days. This can be controlled by painkillers prescribed by your surgeon. Indeed, patients may feel disappointed by the appearance of their swollen ears after regaining consciousness from anesthesia. However, this is only a temporary impact and the ears take their reformed shape and a more optimal size in a couple of days. Normal activities for both children and adults can be resumed after a week or two of recovery from the surgery. The patients must nevertheless take care to avoid any activities that could cause a damage to the ear, until it is fully healed.
Otoplasty does not impact the hearing of a person and has not shown to cause any hearing loss. A child may undergo the surgery after attaining the age of 4 years as the ears are fully developed by then.
