A few years ago, there was a commercial for a UK gym advising men that brassieres are for the ladies and they should work out to get rid of the excess fat in the chest area. But plastic surgeons like Dr. Pope say that exercise only gets people so far when it comes to ridding themselves of the excess fat in the chest area, clinically known as gynecomastia.
That’s because some men have more breast tissue because of a hormone imbalance, which will never completely go away no matter how much they exercise. The other cause of gynecomastia, obesity, can be remedied somewhat by weight loss, but the issue of excess tissue is always there, just as it is on the rest of the body.
That’s what one man, profiled in a dramatic weight-loss story, learned after losing more than 200 pounds. He kept getting teased on the street about his the excess fat in the chest area and eventually had gynecomastia surgery to successfully rid himself of the problem. And he’s not alone; apparently 20,000 American men had the surgery last year, an 80 percent increase from 10 years ago.
It has been suggested that the paparazzi focusing more on aging male celebrities and their problems with their chest area, as well as plastic surgery shows like “Dr. 90210,” have brought more attention to the issue in recent years, making the surgery more socially acceptable. And with one in three men having some breast enlargement as they age, it’s an issue that certainly isn’t going away.
